Version Numbers

Posted under Fenixworks

Someone asked me yesterday what version of FileMaker Pro we teach. It occurred to me that I don’t really answer that question anywhere. Also with Tuesday’s announcement about the CS3 release, I can see where having version numbers on the site can be an important thing.

Here’s a list of the current versions we are using at Fenixworkshop:

  • FileMaker Pro v8.5
  • Dreamweaver 8 (aka CS2)
  • BBEdit 8.6
  • PHP 5.2.1

We are currently looking into offering Flash instruction (it’s going to happen soon) and finalizing the curriculum around PHP/MySQL. Subscribe to the RSS Feed of classes and your reader will update you whenever we update the class schedule.

As far as Adobe CS3 goes, we will be upgrading our iMacs after it ships and all related workshops (Dreamweaver, Flash, etc) will gear up in that direction. In the coming day or so, the website will start displaying the version number of software where appropriate.

Saturday Academy

Posted under Dreamweaver

We wrapped up another Saturday Academy class last week. This one had 8 middle school kids learning all the secrets about Dreamweaver.

It’s always fun for me when i teach kids to see what they come up with for topics. It’s normal for me to let them build websites about anything they like, based on certain criteria that we teach. They have to use Dreamweaver, they have to build it from scratch, and they have to do it over the range of four Saturdays.

This time around, one kid built a site about Dragons while one built a nice little site about the universe with pictures found at web locations like NASA. Another kid built a site showing photos they had taken from remote locations in Guatemala. One kid was obsessed with Wii, and another made a site with pictures made from the built in camera on the machine and an application called “Photobooth.”

The time before this with Saturday Academy high school students we had similar results, but one student built a site about Oscar Wilde that even he would have enjoyed.

Some good advice about CSS

Posted under Fenixworks

Today I ran across this article that I think is really good advice for anyone working in with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). If you are new to HTML and CSS, it is a good read because it will help establish some good habits. If you’re a seasoned pro, it may point out a few things you’ve neglected. Either way, it has a ton of information about margins and padding.

The Blog comes to Fenixworks

Posted under Announcements

6simpsons.jpgFenixworks has a blog! Welcome.

Watch this space for tips and tricks with Dreamweaver, FileMaker Pro, Photoshop, and all of the other applications we teach at Fenixworks. We’ll offer advice about CSS, HTML, PHP and MySQL as well as the occasional AppleScript or Mac OS piece.

You’ll catch us discussing topics that come up in the current workshops, and sometimes we’ll be talking about plans or schedules for future workshops. In either case, everything in the blog will be related to the things we teach.

The comments are all moderated. There is just too much spam out there these days to open the comments up to everyone. The best answer seems to be a creative use of spam tools to catch most of it and then to manually approve those items that are left over. If you post a comment and it doesn’t appear right away, bear with us.

So sit back and enjoy. Read on and learn more. This is where the ride starts.
